Hi, as it says , is there something i can use to help set latencies for audio and analogue equipment in my DAW (Cubase/Ableton) rather than by ear... (my ears are old ;-'0 )
any help appreciated
thanks
Tony

Which latencies? Device or plugin?
Set the device latencies, no. You set that latency in the driver controls, plugins dont have access to that, just the host, or the driver control panel.
A plugin that can nudge automatic plugin latency compensation where its not quite right by misreporting its own latency, yes. of course that only works if your host does automatic plugin latency compensation.

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

thanks whytyerabbit..
its both external devices and audio plugins... seeing a few latency problems i cant resolve easily.. was just hoping for a 'quick' solution...
I suppose it could be midi latency as well... is there such a thing for midi latency?
I was thinking along the lines of a simple spectral graph with a pure tone for each signal and to see visually how to adjust the latency..
ill give that voxengo thing a go..

Are you recording audio into your DAW with plugins loaded in your project that cause latency? In Live, you can see the latency a plug-in introduces just by hovering the mouse cursor over it. Deactivating a plug-in with latency does not change any introduced latency (and delay compensation) in Live.
I’m only mentioning this because I usually bounce to audio (print fx) anything with latency before recording external gear or even if I have a part to play via midi. Doing it this way means you don’t have to deal with timing issues.

thats great advice elxsound...
Im only just begginig my journey of adding external synths (some old units i had years ago, Roland JV1080, D110, Emu Proteus 1 and Xtreme lead.. and using software synths at the same time through a focusrite 18i20, I wanted to add external compression to my Roland TR8-s as well on separate audio channels for Bass drum, snare etc..
just eondering about options..

In Ableton, the External Instrument plugin is there to help with using real hardware. I guess you're maybe using that to compensate for that already?tonymax wrote: Tue Sep 07, 2021 12:47 pm its both external devices and audio plugins... seeing a few latency problems i cant resolve easily.. was just hoping for a 'quick' solution...

Some hosts do this as a more automatic process ie they have a plugin/device that also measures the latency for you. Not sure what Cubase does.
The manual way to estimate what the latency is, is to create a recording with a simple note/sound, play that through the hardware and record it again. Then you can zoom into both recordings and compare them, and work out the latency from the timing difference.

Good idea, will try rthat..![]()

Another thing you can do is export the project to audio and open that as a new session before recording. Then drag that newly recorded track back into the other project.
It’s less work IMO.
Otherwise it’s better to avoid using plugins that cause latency while still building out your song.
