Volvo the car manufacturer created a rather thought-provoking and moving documentary... The connection to DAWs is evident in this, and raises questions in how alternative ways in which music can be made with some assistance.

I wrote what was almost certainly the first software that could read brain EEG while someone was listening to music and extract aspects of that music from the EEG signal - without me or the software having any idea what that music was. I did that in 2003-2004 for presentation at a conference. THE IT aspect was trivial, what was important was to have the insight into brain dynamics to drive the statistical methodology I developed that could then capture the "meaning" of the signal
Whilst it is attractive to think that going from brain to instrument would in some sense be better it actually isnt and cannot be because the relation with the motor action is lost and that is incredibly important. For composition sure, but for performance not at all. We sort of know this anyway from when we work with the performers in the compositional process - the to and fro changes the nature of the composition.
