Hey guys, my laptop got into an issue and I had to take out the internal Toshiba SD drive which is actually a micro solid state drive oh, I bought an adapter so it is an SSD to USB oh, I can connect it to another computer and shows all the files are, however I cannot access it I believe need to decrypt it or otherwise I allow myself access to my own hard drive because I think Windows is protecting it or something. There used to be a way that I could install ubuntu and then it'll automatically give me access to it but I tried that and I didn't work oh, so what am i options here do I need to install some kind of specific software that allow me to access the files. I think there's also some way BitLocker it or something but any advice I'll be very helpful.

So I guess maybe wish version of Ubuntu or Linux do I need to install that'll help me access the drives without me being to do anything else, or what software do I need to install that'll help me copy the files on SD onto a another backup. What would you guys do if you're in my situation?

I did put Ubuntu on a flash drive, and the drive showed up, but it would not let me click on it, it says it is an encrypted drive. I tried doing that like 3 years ago and it worked out anything else doing it.

I have no idea what to start what do I look for to determine what I need to do, what key, I do know Windows 10 has BitLocker or something to do with that. I opened up the laptop so I can have all the part numbers and everything like that. do I need to like find my machine code? would that be on the core CPU or what? the laptop does not boot up

Do you remember actually enabling BitLocker on the laptop? And did you log in to Windows with a username and password?

You might be able to recover the data if you can create a Windows boot "disc", either on a CD/DVD or flash drive. If you created a log-in password for Windows, you'd use that to "decrypt" the data and copy it to another drive.

I never did anything preventative wise, so I didn't set up at lock or anything like that. I didn't even have a password to access my computer. I think all I need to do is just take ownership of the entire drive, if that's the case then it should be easy peasy but I'm not sure.

You should already have "ownership"/access to all the parts of the drive you need -- I wouldn't start trying to change Windows' file-access attributes. You can't do that from within Ubuntu, anyway, but you shouldn't have to do that at all unless a virus changed all the attributes.

I took out the internal hard drive of the laptop that had windows installed on it and I connected it to an adapter so I can access the files on another computer. so I don't know if I should have access to the files from a different windows that will let me access the files on an SSD that's encrypted but I don't know. I tried to click on the files once and it said I do not have permission, so I have to transfer permission from the laptop I'm using to access it unless there's another option. the other option that allows me to access the files without messing with Windows permissions was installing Ubuntu which kind of bypasses Windows security altogether, or at least did 3 years ago I'm up at the latest version is not allowing me to do that, does anybody know which version would allow me to do that to bypass the Windows security. I'm essentially hacking into a hard drive I guess, since it's an internal hard drive I guess, and not external, I don't really know why I should be an issue.

Ah, OK, that's different: You will have to request "permission" if you now have the drive connected to another computer and being accessed by a different user account. But that's fine, and it shouldn't be a problem. Tell it you want to access/click yes/offer up a blood sample/do whatever you have to do to agree, and Windows will take a minute or two to give this new account access permissions where necessary.

Windows requiring permission is an issue because you're accessing the OS drive (and accounts/files) from a different user account.

That said, are you sure BitLocker has encrypted the contents of the drive? Can you provide a screenshot of what you're seeing?
