How to make that sound...

Hey bros.

I am really chasing a specific sound + groove you might say.

First example: Andromeda - Eyelipse (The whole album is splendid. Andromeda - Temptaions 2002)

link:

First of all i want to say that choosing the same notes and scales is maybe 50% of the sound design. As with this I was to able to achieve maybe 90% melody in the first mentioned track with ableton wavetable + delay and reverb with at most ease.

1.I want to ask what synths were used mainly in those years 98'-2005
2.What kind of multibands were used for phase coloring bassline or did they even do it? :D
3.The groove as i can hear is very 909 shufflish. Any reccomendations on how would i achieve that shuffle expect nudging sample by sample on the roll haha.
4.Any info from that time would be useful, techniques, how stuff was done, everything to the core. :D
5.Also I see that almost every song from this album (Andromeda - Temptations) has a Stereo Bassline, lots of space effects, ping pongs, reverbs maybe and it is masterfully done. And panning on the bass as well.
6.Anything that would help me hone my craft on thise fields would be appreciated.

Another great album from the guy Andromeda - Sensations (2005), This one more jumpy. Also great colors.

Song example: Andromeda - Coketail

link:

1.I noticed both albums are super minimalistic but full on rocking! I would surely say this falls on an marvelous groove and mix.
2.Also reverbs and delays from that time, special tricks. It's mostly way of thinking and techniques I would say, not so much to the plugins...
3.I would advise every trance and progressive lover to listen to thise albums, as they are top of the tops. Very full, intriguing, moving, they get me dancing every time. Can't stop listening for 2 months straight. A lot of soul went into this music.

Honorable mention is Protonica they to me have the same grooves like the Early andromeda stuff 909 shuffle

Example Protonica - Planet Gaia, Album: Search (Also very good)

link:

Maybe some will say "Sit down and try to do it yourself" and you're probably right. But a little help wont hurt :D
I searched the net for this stuff but everything is new school...

Also a very good channel for everything that came in 90s, The nourishment of the dance/trance is all there. "2Trancentral" it is called. Not to be mistaken with todays trancentral (white trippy icon).

link:

A say about todays trance is: It is maybe more technicly ready, but the groove and soulness just fall off, Very repetitive and empty. The albums till 2014, 2015 are promising, after then it is all quantity. The last best one i would say is liquid soul Revolution...

Also anybody open to chat about anything connected to this period/era, would be nice. I am open to take course!

Thank you for your time! :phones: :tu: :!: :) 8) :o

Hi!

I'm making a more modernized version of prog-psy myself, but have to say I absolutely adore these Andromeda albums, as well as basicaly everything else made by Anders Nillsen (Chromosome, Soul Surfer ... that dude is genius!).

I think it was mostly hardware-based production, I'd also love to have some insights about the synths and techniques used.

Generally when I think about early 00's trance/psy, that's Access Virus, Clavia Nordlead, maybe JP8000 (that one was mostly used in "anthemic trance", it was the supersaw synth) - so you may want to check the plugins that emulate these synths, such as Viper and Discovery. Also Hive2 has that "mid 00 VA" sound despite it doesn't emulate anything specific. Add loads of dub delays and ping-pong delays and you are good to go.

I think many of the oldschool psytrance basslines used the old version of Cubase's stock Quadrafuzz for coloration.

One important element of Andromeda's sound is how the percussion interacts with the bassline and synth stabs, like in this track 1:30-2:20 (listen to kick/bass/hats/toms/synth stabs combo - very tight groove!)

You may also want to check out this album if you don't know it yet. It sounds like it has been inspired by Andromeda, but without closely copying it

I wrote a reply, it didn't go through.

I listened to the album you gave me. Nice stuff, like The Healer A lot.

I would say that the mix is far more clear and separated in andromeda but well altogether.
And in sensogram it is far more sparse and sound is less together in a way.

The groove is more robotic as well. I can that andromeda is a master of groove and mix.

I heard the part in the track you sent. It is called "Twisted Sister" btw. I can listen that sound flow diynamics and mix clarity and togetherness is awsomely done. Outstanding. Every part of the song from synths to hats to space effects is moving together alively with coutinued diynamics by one another. One big grooved sound. Awazing.

Also Astrix - Eye to Eye (2002) has the similar colors in basses. Its the same period...
Also stuff that i just found out. Silicon Sound - Pure Analog (2003) (Very Good) Also has similar colors. Highly recommend this one. Some kinda of progressive early forest with full on vibes.
Andromeda still has its character the most out of thise.

One thing about that Sensogram album is that it seems to be mastered pretty hot, some parts sound almost distorted. Also the mixing isn't really that clean but strangely these production issues impart certain charm to the whole thing.

Indeed, the upolader got it wrong

Yeah, all the classic stuff. Seems that our tastes are a lot similar when it comes to oldschool progressive and psytrance. I could give some more listening suggestions but I don't want to clutter the thread and probably you already know some of these.

As far as the thread is in the sound-design section, maybe select a certain sound in a certain track and people will try to recreate it?

Hi there, I stumbled on your post and I wanted to reply to tell how we did it back then.

1.I want to ask what synths were used mainly in those years 98'-2005
We used Cubase 5.1 and stock plugins and the vanguard / Albino software synth and the VB-1 bass plugin. ALso Fm7 was used on a few tracks. The first album was written in 10 days on Nicks computer in Holland. 1 track per day. Very simple progressive style. Focus was to make most use of the few plugins we had. We didnt use any compression and almost no eq. We slapped a double delay (ping pong) on the bass lines and didnt care about stereo bass problems. we did what we liked.

2.What kind of multibands were used for phase coloring bassline or did they even do it? :D
What compression? Only compression was in the mastering. We just designed the sound and put it in the volume we liked it. We used zero compression back then. Nowdays yes, but back then no.

3.The groove as i can hear is very 909 shufflish. Any reccomendations on how would i achieve that shuffle expect nudging sample by sample on the roll haha.
Back then we nudged it, the quantise funktion didnt have degrees of swing. We did do something cool with the ping pong delays though that we learned from Bamboo Forest. We set a 8d ping pong and then we added a few milliseconds which creates swing. Old school XD

4.Any info from that time would be useful, techniques, how stuff was done, everything to the core. :D There is nothing to it really. It is a very simple album. I think people hear/ more into it than they should. Some producers say it is crappy production and we agree. It was our early dawn in music making. Had we made it more complex then it would have shown the lack of technique. We kept it veeery simple and open. I believe the strength of the album was the selecting what sounds should go together. To create the pallette. There are not a single "trick" in the album.

5.Also I see that almost every song from this album (Andromeda - Temptations) has a Stereo Bassline, lots of space effects, ping pongs, reverbs maybe and it is masterfully done. And panning on the bass as well. We were inspired by Atmos who had some tracks with bass delays or TOP bass with delays on it. I believed it worked well because I think somehow the delay filtered out some deep bass automatically, or it would have sounds messy =)

SO yeah, first album was done in 10 days and the 2nd one in 1 month. It was sheer joy back then to make music, you know, before one learned more about production and then nothing soundsed good anymore haha. The enthusiasm was 100%. We really loved making these 2 albums.
Made with Scandinavian "vemod" (melancholy), greek food and tsipouro and some amazing drugs back in the days in Holland. If you have any questions then email me on andersnilssondvm@gmail.com (mailto:andersnilssondvm@gmail.com) and look out for more music soon on dreamvisionmedia.space
