It's easy to forget how old the f**kers are. Sadly, not much older than me, which makes me a nearly-as-old f**ker. Last time I saw UB40 they made a point of advertising the "UB40 with Ali & Astro" as opposed to the "UB40 with the other ones" - they'll have to change that now...

I must have been approx. 12yo, when I first heard their music in a Dutch (VARA?) docu.
I got a portable tape player, and used to go bicycling with that thing on my carrier, blasting "UB40 live" and "UB44" 8)
And I made a button badge from cardboard and a pin  which didn't do my pauperish image any good in those days of 80s bling.
UB40's music made a lasting impression, I'm still very fond of their early work. Never got to see them (OR Chrissie Hynde) live though

Damn, missed this news.

If there's two UB40s touring, you'd want to know which one you're seeing…

And I have little love for the pop hit machine they turned into in the mid-80s, but Signing Off is indeed great stuff.

Oh for sure - I never saw the other UB40 but rumour is they just weren't very UB40 without Ali.
Yeah - I like the pop stuff, but just as a kind of singalong surface fluff kinda thing. Some good covers. But their first 2 albums will always be my favourites. Lots of bands take a while to reach their peak and develop styles etc, but UB40 just hit the ground running - pure class and apparently recorded on the cheap in their kitchen etc.

Weirdly, I never saw them first time around, dunno why. In later years they were just outright pros with such a huge catalogue of stuff everyone knows - but even then, when they play(ed) the original stuff you can tell the crowds just snap to attention. I've heard them while I've been straight as a dye, no artificial compunds in my blood stream...and they were just as good. In fact I almost appreciated them more. Some of those brass lines that open the old true reggae stuff - once heard, never forgotten.

And...Rat In Me Kitchen. You have to be dead to not like that. Musical, silly, funny, doesn't matter how shit life is - it cheers you up.
