Has anybody sorted through DX7 presets for the decent ones, for Dexed?

I have been uninstalling and reinstalling Dexed over the past few months, because every time I try to use it, the sheer quantity of crap, 'nasal FM' type sounds, which are in the huge DX7 preset collection available on the internet, means it takes so long to find just one decent sound, that I give up, decide that all my other VSTs sound so much better, and uninstall it. Then I find a new collection of banks and reinstall it, only to find they are the same 'nasal FM' unusable crap as before, and uninstall it again.
Then I watch videos of the factory sounds on Youtube and think - they sound pretty good, and reinstall it. Has anybody gone through the huge preset collection and saved the good ones? i.e. the ones that don't sound like the ten thousand basses that all sound exactly the same, and are rubbish to begin with?
Maybe we at KVR could take a portion of the presets each and go through them, and save the decent ones, until we have a usable collection of maybe a few hundred presets (or even a thousand, I don't know if the DX7 is capable of producing a thousand different sounds... LOL.)

Another option might be to try this online preset generator. The results will likely vary a lot but it might be a bit less samey.

Benfordlaw dude is obviously not capable of grasping fm
In every FM/OPS thread he asks for some presets to showcase the power of fm , then he's disillusioned when the 80's stock presets are not up hiss alley ..those were the 80's man , and yes 90% of those are horrible !!
FM is capable of almost everything ,it's the synth for deep basslines , ambient , etc
I assume you're just a young lazy dude that needs instant gratification without even taking the time to learn the theory of FM
Without understanding it's basic concepts you're gonna stay dissapointed , yo need to learn about harmonic overtones and how these are created in fm .
The relation between operators and their ratios, and most imortantly the gain control of the operator's output ( envelope )

hiss alley? that's the sound of the DX!gentleclockdivider wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 1:52 pm then he's disillusioned when the 80's stock presets are not up hiss alley
maybe mr law can start by showing us how sorting those presets is done. it's just a few thousand presets, no biggie. the rest of us slobs wouldn't want to make any mistakes and let any of those nasty 80s presets through.

No, I don't believe anyone has so here is your chance to contribute something positive and do so yourself and then share with the community.BenfordLaw wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 12:33 pmHas anybody sorted through DX7 presets for the decent ones, for Dexed?
Maybe we could make a challenge and everybody participating can go through their collections and pick 32 of what they consider the best or really good DX sounds.
It would be interesting to see what different people consider the top DX sounds.
My favorite going all the way back to the first day I owned my DX was the Tubular Bell sound. To me that is the signature sound of not only the DX but an era of my life.

I saved them all out as individual Logic presets (which was a task!) so I can access them, search and organise them as necessary.
One of these days, Logic will (hopefully) add a favourites/ratings feature to their browser which will come in handy. I don't feel the need to delete anything for now, but certainly as I come across stuff I like I can easily copy the individual presets into a favourites folder.
We all have different tastes though, so I'm not sure how useful a community effort to "rate" them would be...

You saved all 20,000 ?beely wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 3:28 pm I saved them all out as individual Logic presets (which was a task!)
Even Tine 1, Tine 2, Tine 3 etc etc ?
I think out of those 20,000 we might be able to get maybe 500 (?) unique sounding patches.
Sure there are a ton of Bass 1, Bass 2 etc patches that are just slight variations but totally unique patches are far more rare.
Of course everyone's definition of "good sounds" will vary so everyone's 500 would likely be different.

No... it was actually 118,000 patches, 3800+ banks.
We have a Logic patch sharing thread and I've done a lot of plugins this way (as I like the consistency, the ability to patch change via MIDI/keyboard, search by name etc).

No, I don't do this *manually*, I build automated scripts to save them out. Even so, this took over 300 hours to do (basically running it overnight for weeks, as it's fairly slow...)
I could *properly* dedupe them using SoundDiver but haven't really found it was necessary or that I would gain a lot by doing that work...

Wow !
So not just Tine 1 and Tine 2 then but Tine 1267 as well ?
Of course any synth except perhaps sample based synths have a theoretical max number of unique patches they can create based on the complexity of their architecture.
I suppose there is probably some mathematical formula that would calculate close to that number for the DX-7 not counting patches that are identical to the human ear.
I wonder what that number is for the 6 Op DX? I imagine it would be in the few thousands. Keeping in mind that unique does not try to factor in the subjective nature of "good" and "bad" patches.

LOL. I was going to put something in my original post about not wanting to make my own presets, because strangely enough, I actually spend time making music, most people don't have the time to make new presets, which is why we are grateful to those of you who do make them.gentleclockdivider wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 1:52 pm Benfordlaw dude is obviously not capable of grasping fm

I used to have a CX5M, when they first came out, did you?
"Without understanding it's basic concepts you're gonna stay dissapointed"
Yes, because obviously I have to understand how a sound is made in order for it to sound good to me and other people...
Thanks for the FM synthesis lesson, I wasn't asking for that.

LOL. I presume you have replied in the same way to everybody else on here who ever asked anything about presets?psynical wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 4:36 pm Imagine asking other people to do all your work for you...
"decent" is relative to you, dude, and if you want those you'll need to sort them yourself.
We all know that MOST of the presets available in the huge number that are available for the DX7 are utterly useless and sound the same as each other. How awful of me to suggest that VOLUNTEERS go through a section of those available presets, and organise ourselves, so that we don't each waste time going over the same presets. What a crazy idea!

It's, at minimum, 127^28, which is 8 * 10^58.Teksonik wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 4:49 pm I wonder what that number is for the 6 Op DX? I imagine it would be in the few thousands. Keeping in mind that unique does not try to factor in the subjective nature of "good" and "bad" patches.
Edit: no, 127^32, I read my patch notes wrong, so 2.0 * 10^ 67, which is a moderately large number.
