So I just saw that Cubase 12 will not be using VST2 plugins anymore, only VST3.

I think that's a bit ridiculous tbh, so many plugins still use the VST2 platform and work well, cutting that off might really stop devlopment of a few really good plugins.

Why don't they leave things alone ?

EDIT : I Mis-read the original post about this, its for Apple Silicon

I commented elsewhere.
I strongly believe this only is per the up coming Apple Silicon Native version.

No. Sidechaining is VST3 only in Cubase, but, Cubase runs VST2 also.

Not sure where the rumours come from that say VST2 is dropped on Apple M1 computers. I'd wait for something official. As this thread proves well, rumours could be incorrectly interpretated.

And now, everyone who just reads the headline thinks that Steinberg will drop VST2 in their DAW's. :P

It at least would be the logical consequence. After trying to pressure devs into VST3 for years and already dropping VST2 shell plugin support in Cubase, kicking VST2 out completely would make sense. Not that it is a great move, but well it's Steinberg...

Yep I mis-read it. THat's my bad
Cubase/VST 3
After several months of development our engineering team has recently completed most of the work needed to support VST 3. We currently have internal builds of all of our plug-ins and will begin testing in the next few weeks. We expect that when Cubase 12 is released at some time in 2022, the upcoming Apple Silicon version of Cubase may no longer support VST 2. We can’t confirm a release date for VST 3 support – we expect this release to come after our initial Apple Silicon / ARM release for MacOS.

Please check back here for the latest news on Apple Silicon/ARM and VST 3.

So it's even a "may not". Best to wait and see then. :)

Once again, I can only pity Mac users though. Or rather, can't help to be a bit gleefull. :P Nice "progress" if you can't use more of your plugins anymore.

"Are you going to trash VST2?"
"Yes, that is correct. Only on Apple M1 systems VST2 plugins won't run."

Huh?

No wonder that people misinterpret their statements.

I read from Matthias Quellmann's statements the following: VST2 plugins will still run for some time in Cubase, but, at some point, Cubase will become VST3 only. Which is what we already know. Since years.
