Audio Mixdown, does buffer size matter?

I'm not a big fan of freezing, but i'd like to export a few vsti tracks using export/audio mixdown function in sx2. I'm confused about something. Does your soundcards buffer size effect the latency of an audio track that you mixdown or is any buffer size ok. I was wondering if it's ok to keep my latency at 20ms when I mixdown a vsti midi track. Would there be any latency in the newly created audio file or is latency only applicable when your playing in realtime?

Also there is a realtime export option in the audio mixdown window, should this be on? thanks

Let's say´: It *shouldn't* matter.
Just give it a try, reimport the exported file, phase invert it and x-listen to the rest. Theoretically there should be silence.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

anyone? the last 2 respones left me totally confused???

if you dont make a realtime mixdown, the latency doesn´t affect "mixdowning" :)

its internally processed and has nothing to do with it. 5,10 or 20 ms - the outputted file will be always the same (imho)

on the other hand, realtime mixdown means all audio is written to disk while you hear the output. if you use realtime mixdown, latency is an issue (if your computer isn´t fast enough to handle it)

hope that clears it up :P

thanks sonic for clearing that up:)

On my old PC I used to run at 50mS latency to squeeze out the last drops of CPU. I never noticed any problems with mixdowns, bounces or even mixing at that level. Apparently if your latency is too long, then it will affect things like automation (which you might use in a mixdown). Certainly at 20mS I never heard any problem with it. Not even at 50mS, but I never tried any higher than that.

SX compensates for all audio, and seems to have pdc pretty good nowadays - I used to get some delays with VST5.1, but recently I'm in bouncing heaven with SX - no delays anywhere that I've noticed.

If you're running out of juice, I'd say raise your latency even higher than 20mS - shouldn't affect bouncing to any "noticeable" degree.

Hi trancenrg69,

the only problems I got was when using Asynth and the synths by ConcreteFX as they have problems with large audio card buffers when using SX2/Nuendo2. They behave exactly the same when doing an offline mixdown.
Both developers are aware of the problem and intend to fix it so that we can use their great synths in SX2/Nuendo2 without problems. :D
