Why is there still no Yamaha-SY99 plugin ?

Post

I would nominate Plogue to do it.

Because Yamaha own the copyrights to the ROM samples/recordings, and haven't made one (they don't seem to be much interested in the plugin market, generally.)

Indeed, strange for, I think the only legendary synthesizer company that owns a DAW software company (Steinberg).

I don't think the Rom is the point.

There have been some conversations about this in the past. In this thread you can find a link to a Reaktor instrument that tries to be a Wave+FM instrument in the style of the SY77/99.

I agree that the samples and even pure emulation doesn't need to be a part of it, but you will not find that to be a common perspective. So a dev tackling such a large project is going to consider the inevitable comparisons to the real thing and the expectations of those who want emulation.

The Syntronik sampled one is pretty good:

To be very clear, I don't know what the OP is talking about, but I'm definitely not talking about a mediocre rompler collection of samples with a simple subtractive back end. There isn't anything in Syntronik that could even come close to touching what the SY99 can do in terms of being an instrument.

There's this, and probably other SY99/SY77 sample libraries out there if you just want the sound of the presets.

Yamaha has never done a plugin version of any hardware instrument. But they don't stop anyone from doing so: Dexed and the CS-80 emulators are allowed, provided they do not use the Yamaha name or suggest it has official ties to Yamaha.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Neither involve using copyrighted samples which is the real issue for a proper SY99 emulation.

Arturia do you listen?
The Sy99/TG77 are very fine digital synths and we want them as a plugin!
And the Kawai K-5000 ,its time for digital for me everything what is analog we have,
only the Roland System 100m is missing. :help:

Has any serious dev approached Yamaha and asked about licensing the ROM waveforms? I'd be really curious what their response would be.

I for one would love to sell my SY77 if there was a plugin that could replace it.

They would probably run into a corporate brick wall. "Talk to our lawyers who will talk to the engineers who will talk to public relations who will talk to upper management who will talk to"......

Since Yamaha is still making hardware synths I doubt they would have any incentive to make the few dollars licensing fees for the SY Rom would bring.

But saying that I would definitely be a potential customer for an actual SY99 emulation.

Yes, that's quite true. Excellent point.
