Apple to recent purchasers of Logic 6: f**k off

Having bought Logic 6 only a week ago, I contacted Apple Computer today to find out whether recent purchasers of Logic 6 would get any break on the upgrade deal. Word from on high is: you're shafted, sucka! No "Up to Date" program has been announced for Logic 6 at all and everybody has to pay for the upgrade. How's that for German customer service from a California company?

This apparently the case even if you bought Logic one *day* before 7 was released: gotta pay the full upgrade fee. Anyone else think this sucks?

Yeah, so do I. The morale has to be: always wait 'till the next upgrade before buying Emapple.

I'm on PC/Cubase. The SX2 -> SX3 upgrade costs the same as SX1 -> SX2. So, I'm trying not to upgrade 'till SX4 arrives.

Let the corporations get what they give.

Can you still return version 6 and tell them you dont want it (some sort of consumer return policy). Then go and get version 7?

Give Apple a few weeks. Sometimes they announce these after the fact if enough people complain.

Always be polite with your complaints though!

:D i've written them 2 really snotty e.mails

the buggers..!!! if there's no discount i'm not upgrading.. simple as that..

i'll wait another while.. till i can wait no longer.. :D

then they'll bring out logic 8 the next week after that.

i had all the instruments apart from space designer when they bought out 6.4

agghhhhhh!!!!!

Did you buy v6 in hopes of getting a discount? If so, likely the reason they have the rule.

Those kinds of deals make sense for companies like Ableton, who are still looking to grab new market share, but Apple only really cares about maintaining its hardware markets.

Sadly, no. I'd definitely be bummed if I had, but in this case I genuinely had no idea 7 was about to be announced :-(

Not sure how Apple's policy makes sound business sense, to be honest. Can't really see the "Logic" in pissing off customers who just bought your now-obsolete software by trying to screw them for the full upgrade fee a week after they dropped big money on a full version of their software. Thing is, Apple doesn't do this with any of its other software products. Normally they have an "Up to Date" program in place to make sure recent purchasers don't get stung for the full upgrade price.

Actually it's not an upgrade... It's a whole bunch of stuff for $300. I'm sure they could care less if we keep using Platinum, Gold, Pro or whatever... They know the people who use it to make a living will buy it anyway! I could have kept using Platinum, but I thought Hmmm... all those instruments for $200... pretty good deal! But here I am again... Hmmm all that stuff for $300.... Pretty good deal again... I wish I hadn't spent the $200. on similar stuff recently, though! Now that was dumb... But, how was I to know?? Really, if it was just features, I'd be pissed... But 3 new instruments, and a bunch of effects too! Nah, that's not as ugly as the Cubase 3 deal!

I think Apple should charge for the upgrade even if you bought it a day earlier. They were probably sold for a cheaper price and Sculpture is worth every penny - it sounds awesome - thats just hearing the thing on the website !!!! ( I don't own Logic - wish I did but no Mac :( )

Anyway, that's my view :)

i ordered logic pro 10 days ago and asked what if logic 7 is released ,i was told by sound technology (emagic now apples uk distributer for logic) that i would not get stung! on calling today i was told i will have to pay another£200 its apples policy,I explained that i just paid £150 for logic6 pro and that would be equal to paying a total of seven hundred dollars for updates!!! was basicaly told tough!!! . Having been an apple and logic user for over 10 years this sucks!
At the moment i am waiting for an apple customer services manager to call me back and will try to take my complaint as high as possible. If enough people complain maybe we can do something about this.

i'm willing to bet they'll sort you out. You've had it for a week, and you'd asked if there was an imminent update and based your decision to buy L6 on that. Had they said to wait a week, you would have done so.

Is it too late to return the update? ;)

Yeah, I spoke to a friendly woman at Apple today who indicated that there was really no one at Apple she could point me to who would be able to resolve this issue. That's always helpful.

I haven't even opened my box and it's still shrink-wrapped. Anybody else have any ideas? Any Apple-ers on this forum who can help?

It does suck, but if you look at how the whole Logic thing has worked, it seems clear that Apple's main objective is not to keep Logic users, but rather Mac users.

It's doubtful that most Logic users who feel bitter over this upgrade are going to stop using their Macs, so Apple has won. Likely, Logic has provided a reason for some (many?) PC users to migrate over to Macs, so the threat of alienating an existing home user customer base is pretty moot so long as hardware sales are maintained.

Apple knows it can afford to piss customers off at certain levels.

Still sucks for you, but that's economics I guess.

Cheers,
Steve

In my case, I finally upgraded to logic pro about 10 days ago. I have owned Logic/Logic Audio since version 1.2 and spent an awful lot of $ over the years on it. The upgrades ($699 for the first one and $299 for the second) will have cost me as much as they are charging for the full version of version 7.

People who argue that well, it's great software, and worth $1000 are totally missing the point. I have essentially been given NO credit at all for owning the software at all, and I've had to buy it new, essentially. That totally sucks.

The salesperson that I spoke to at Apple obviously thought it sucked too, but really couldn't say anything...
