I've only ever hacked a couple of videos together in windows movie maker before and was looking for a better option... prefably lightweight and easy to pick up (occasional use), mainly syncing video to music if that affects the choice, maybe some fundamental green screen stuff etc.

Are things like Video Pro X or movavi video editor worth looking at over the freebies like hit film etc (both in a humble bundle at the mo).

Cheers.

I really like Magix Vegas Pro Edit. They have that one in a Humble Bundle regularly.

The fullest options are the free version of Resolve, or wait for this year's Humble Bundle for last year's Vegas Pro. (Not the Vegas 'Studio' or whatever its called)

However, both are a bit more heavy-duty than you're possibly talking about. There's a 'home' tier of Vegas that's often a lower tier on Humble offers that include the Pro version. Vegas Studio?
I dont know the Movavi stuff, it seems to have come from nowhere and be pimped everywhere....

DaVinci Resolve free was easy to pick for me and offers more features that some commercial software.

If you just want to stitch together some videos and music, it won't bother you with very advanced option it has.

Thanks all.

I'll keep an eye out for Vegas and give Resolve a go in the meantime.

FWIW, the one thing that threw me a little bit with Resolve is that it doesnt open with a timeline view like most DAWs and video editors; it opens on its 'Media' page. Switch to the Cut page (or Edit page) via the icons at the very bottom.

This video helped me get started

I don't use 99% of what Resolve does, but it has always behaved as though it has a very light footprint.

Resolve is VERY easy to use in the basic edit page.

I've used Vegas for a long while and it's not quite as simple to use as Resolve...in my opinion. Resolve can get very, very deep if you want it to, but the UI does a good job of keeping more in depth features away from the basic edit page.

I'd used FCPX for a while, so Resolve has a kinda sorta FCP layout to choose from.
It's as easy, easily, and FCP is very, very easy. Resolve doesn't have so many cute titles and presets. Apple keeps adding them to App Store.
One thing to note is how you fade: there's handles on both side of a clip you just drag 'in'.

"the free version" is extremely deep, the thing people pay for involves sharing/collaborative functionality and I suppose advanced integration with some hardware I ain't got or will get.
