Hi all,

After some researching I’m pretty sure this isn’t an easy answer, but if considering all options available in the present time, what’s the best synth (or combo of synth / plug ins, etc) to get if the intent is to authentically recreate Rush songs for a cover band. Also would be nice to have high quality piano / organ..

Thanks,
J

For older 'classic' Rush sounds (before they went digital, mid 80s...)

OBXD is a pretty great emulation of an Oberheim OB-X, one of the supplied banks even has some Rush inspired presets (the Tom Sawyer sweep, Subdivisions throb, Camera Eye etc). Edit: just checked, it's the Rin Elyran bank, presets: Modern Day Warrior, In the Camera Eye, Subdived & Synthetic.

(download it for free, debatable whether they can enforce the 'non commerical' use clause as it's open source...)

Beyond that, any of the modern Mini Moog emulations for lead sounds, maybe IK Multimedias Bully for Taurus pedal sounds... lots of emulations of the synths they used out there, just finding one that suits you/you're budget etc.

OBXD is definitely a good one. There's also a reverb machine soundbank called, "Legends" for Arturia OB-Xa & Analog Lab.

Good point. I just looked. It is released under the GPL

https://github.com/reales/OB-Xd/blob/master/license.txt

So it seems like the only commercial use they could go after is if someone else took the actual code of the synth and either released a copy or derivative without also licensing it under the GPL and/or without including the source code.

So for any musicians who want to use it to create music, it's doesn't seem against the license to use it regardless of whether it's commercial use or not.

Of course, they are providing a service by putting the executable version of it up for people to download. And maybe that's why they're saying that.

Maybe IK Analog Lab Lite ... it covers a lot of classic analog synths and can often be found for next to nothing (or free with something else). https://www.arturia.com/support/analoglablitestart

Geddy used a lot of different keyboards through the years.
Try the Rush fandom site, it lists them all...
