1. The sequencer of your choice. I'm using Samplitude and I think it's very suitable for rock music.
2. A softsampler with some good drums samples. I'm using Kontakt with Wizoo's MiXtended Heavy Kit.
3. Some good compressors/EQs: Samplitude's built in FX are rather good. Otherwise I would recommend the UAD plugins or Sonalksis, PSP etc.
4. Something like Sonic Synth for sounds like strings, choirs and other synth stuff is also very useful.
Besides all that software, you'll propably still need a good recording chain for vocals, guitars, bass and whatever you want to capture from the real world for your music.
Bye, Philipp

If you are trying to do all guitars virtually, I think Virtual Guitarist Electric Edition should be considered. Feel free to check out "Blitzkrieg" and "Ignition" at www.soundclick.com./jeffreynaness.
Note, I think I could have used some processing to make the guitars fullers than they are (particularly in "Ignition", which I did not use the stereo option.
You could also check the official Virtual Guitarist website.

FM7 is great for metal sounds
isnt making metal music strictly on a computer kind of like making classical music with a banjo?
but you should look into VG electric edition for your rhythm guitars and all around composing. Slayer 2 sounds too fake imho for guitar based rock(though it is cool in its own right)

i can still recall the look on the face of the manager at Shakey's (Pizza parlor circa 1975) when I told him I'd be playing 'The Rite of Spring' for my audition.isnt making metal music strictly on a computer kind of like making classical music with a banjo?
i believe a wall of Marshall stacks can overcome either of these deficits
