Komplete Kontrol S88Mk2 display washed out

The right-hand side display on my controller (or should that be Kontroller?) is all washed out, the annoying thing is it's been like this pretty much since new but it seems to be getting worse.
I emailed NI about it and they said that it needed a new display.
They won't sell me one to fit but will fit one new for £50, which wasn't a bad price.
However they only have a service centre in Germany and I'll have to cover all shipping and tax costs. This will make it quite an expensive repair.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so were they able to fix it as a DIY?

I had the same issue but luckily I was still within my warranty period so they arranged collection and weirdly sent me a different unit rather than fix my old one.
