Hello,I wrote a VST-FX a few months ago. Its (currently) avaiable for WIN10 (x64) in VST3-Format. If you have JUCE and an Apple Computer, you can also compile the code on your own, to have an AU-Plugin.
The idea behind this Plugin is to simulate a transferfunction of a transistor for example. Within the build-in functions you can create different functions to control how loud or silent different inputs should be, which means if they get gain or not. Sounds a bit silly, just check the meaning of transferfunctions for transistor eg to understand the meaning.
There also exist a german blog articel about distortion and why this plugin fullfil the conditions in the description at github.
All I want to say, give it a try, it could be fun to add additional distortions to your sound.
