Also, what was the first plugin to support side-chaining?
Another question: Was side-chaining available for VST or other types of plugins first?
I'm curious to learn who the pioneers were. :)

If we are considering software only plugins i.e. not requiring any hardware DSP then:

My guess would be Cubase since Steinberg invented the VST standard in '96 and would have been the first to implement SC in the API.

As for first plugin, again, my guess would be Waves C1 compressor.

Definitely not VST land. Real side-chain support came with VST3, but ther were workarounds for VST2.
AU had it before. MAS (MOTU) also had it for longer. RTAS as well. I guess, for the open plugin formats -MAS or RTAS.
