Damage Drum Kit vs Damage 2?

The Drum Kit is a HY take on a traditional drum kit. Certainly the base samples are rock oriented. Damage 2 is orchestral percussion. The both use the same engine.

How on Earth do you need 21GB of samples for drums? That's just crazy! It does sound very nice, though. Oh, and they are touting it as "orchestral drums", too, although their demos sound very Heavy Metal to me.

Actually it's 24gb uncompressed, 11gb on disk so it's tiny next to one of the Superior Drummer SDX kits. Legacy of Rock, picked at random - 180gb. That's five kits mind, compared to Damage's one, but that's still 36gb per kit on disk, over three times the size. In Toontack's case, it's all their many many mic positions and bleed options, and cymbals are the killer - those buggers take forever to decay.BONES wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 5:48 am How on Earth do you need 21GB of samples for drums? I guess the selling point here is the ease of use to have a custom processed kit. Damage 1 had lots of off-the-shelf crunch stuff, but not so much a complete kit I guess. The separate Punish effect has gone for $49 before now in a sale, so you can roll your own with a similar sonic signature.

180GB!!! That's just absurd. My drum VSTi are all less than 1GB, I think, and even the tens of thousands of samples I've got for Battery is only around 20-30GB. I've also got the free version of Ferrum, which does the same sort of thing as Damage. It's less than a gig, IIRC, and it serves our needs extremely well. I bought Punish years ago but it doesn't seem to work as well as a standalone as it does in their instruments.

All the while you're dealing with single shot snares kicks and toms, the file sizes can be tiny for thousands of options. But emulating a real kit with a real mixer is a whole other deal. You might have 20 mics - round robins and many many velocity layers. Then each instrument - including those 20 second cymbals - gets recorded through every mic for natural bleed sounds. If you wanna hear Cymbal 2 in the kick drum mic, well it's there and user-controllable.
There was a thread here recently with someone complaining that the drum sounds were mixed too high in the overheads in Toontrack stuff. They're not, they're totally realisitc. But having individual controls over the bleed from the toms in the overheads is a production luxury better than even working with a real kit and a drummer. As I said in that thread, it's common for real-world drummers to overdub the cymbals for this very reason, a headache we never have to worry about in the virtual world.
Damage, by contrast, has a mere 5 mic positions, and no bleeds, so it won't be that level of pure realism (though you can still turn drums down in the overheads I'm sure).
