How can I make this with a string instrument?

I suspect this is not arpeggio and I have no idea what to call it. It's the way the guitar is played right in the beginning and during a good portion of this song:



In the official video, the guitar player seems to play it manually, but I want to do it with an instrument plugin and hopefully some effect that will atuomate it. What is that playing technique called and how can I achieve it?

With mandolin players the technique is called "tremolo". On a keyboard you can hit a single key as often and as fast as you can. Use two fingers of two hands if you must.

Check out Session Guitarist Electric Sunburst. The deluxe version may have what you want specifically since it includes melody lines (the regular has just chords IIRC)
