Korg M3, still a worthwhile buy?

Got a line on a used one (for about $850 AUD - $625 USD) and just need to replace the touchscreen.

Are these still a worthwhile synth to have? The Kronos is the successor I know, but second hand units still command big $'s down here...I kinda think the M3 looks groovy though haha!

That sounds a lot for something like that IMO. It wasn't that long after the Trinity/Prophecy etc and to me they sound pretty underwhelming compared to what's around today. I guess if you're a real fan of a certain era sounds/synths then it's worth it. You have to consider you don't pay that much more for some brand new VAs that will blow an M3 out of the water (IMO as always). Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Korg fan and they made some great synths of their time, but most of those workstation type things really were of their time and some of the s/w filters etc have been superseded. M3s look good though admittedly.

It's still a powerhouse in its own right. I still have mine and sometimes consider selling it since we're getting ready to downsize for our next life stage. I have a Kronos also and can tell you they sound different. I may be wrong, but I seen to remember that the M3 was their last workstation that was DOS based. IB Kronos is Linux. The M3 actually has a different presence that's stronger IMO. Remember it's a workstation, not just a sound engine. And it works well in a hybrid setup with your computer.

Of course, the other considerations are what is included as far as which keyboard, the battery, memory, FireWire and Radias card.
And since you say it needs a touch screen replacement, I would suggest researching that first.

I know I wouldn't let mine go that cheap. (But mine is a 73 key, with all card options and everything works.)
