What is the best place to store plugin presets?

I have just downloaded Odin 2 and some other free synths. Odin 2 seems to want to store its presets on my main drive, while I would prefer to store them on an external SSD. Can I redirect where the presets are stored?

You can copy dll or vst files wherever you like, then point to the new location in a DAW, but some plugins are using presets or configuration which is usually stored on c drive in documents/app data folder, and you cannot move those.

Is there any specific reason for that? You must have your external SSD connected every time you launch your DAW, if you want to load your presets.Stagonron wrote: Wed Aug 24, 2022 1:32 am I have just downloaded Odin 2 and some other free synths. The only reason I would see for that is if you are constantly switching between 2 or more computers. I don't see any other advantage in that.
Also note that some synths have a fixed location where they are looking for presets and user presets, which you only will be able to change when you use symbolic links.

SSDs (especially the nVME ones) aren't cheap. As much space as many of these plugins take up (especially anything with sampled content), I want to move as much of the stuff that I don't access frequently to slower, large storage like a HDD. I've already gone through the experience multiple times of moving stuff off of my 500 GB SSD onto the onboard 1 TB HDD, then onto an 2 TB external drive, and finally starting to migrate some stuff to a 6 TB external drive. And my 500 GB SSD is still full. I really don't want my precious SSD space being consumed by a bunch of presets/samples/plugins that will rarely get loaded.

One thing I would say with presets in general is - know WHERE you are storing them and if you need to re-install software make sure you back them up!!

For plugins that insist to store presets etc. in a particular place but you want them stored somewhere else you can look into symbolic links (e.g. Link Shell Extension for Windows).
