Izotope RX - whole track vs select parts of the track

I'm working on a podcast, I'd like to make it sound as good as possible without getting into too much detailed work like hand selecting every pop, click and other sound to smooth them out. I assume some of the RX plugins work well on the entire track while others applied to the whole track can mess things up. I'm looking for recommendations and guidelines for the plugins that work on the entire track, and heads up for what not to use on the entire track.

Consistent noise reduction captured from the specific audio (eg fan noise) can work fine on a whole section of audio if appropriate and not ultra-extreme. Almost everything else can trip you up. I was too liberal on de-plosive for a while before I found it would sometimes take out lower registers of regular words. The various de-clicks and de-crackles can definitely have unintended consequences. It’s a pain, but I think most things do need to be selective.

RX is best done like applying sandpaper. Multiple iterations with finer grit, where needed. Not what I would recommend for your task. You could, but not the right tool for the job imho.

Acon Digital, especially DeClick is worth checking out for your needs. A lot of the Acon Restoration Suite I see as more run on whole track or run live than RX. A simple noise gate will go a long way. Waves has some good tools too, but Acon has them beat. That's where I would start. If you already have RX, then play around with it and see if it meets your needs ... or do a little bake-off in a real-world scenario with Acon & RX.

Thank you for your replies. I ended up using de-reverb on the whole track. For the rest, in some cases it seems easier and faster to me to just delete the section of the track with the clicks/noises if there is no dialogue over it.

I already have RX and don't feel like investing further at this point. If I ever get serious about it, I'll check out Acon
