Looking for a very simple MIDI repeat-on-hold solution

I run Reaper in Linux (fwiw). Basically, I'm recreating a drum machine using a drum sampler, and one of the 'instruments' is a rim shot that repeats when you hold it down, like a machine gun. So I'm looking for an effect where I can hold down one of the keys and it will repeat until I take my finger off.

I tried doing this with an arpeggiator, thinking I could filter the keys in such a way that only one would pass through it. This almost worked, but the arps I have are timed to the BPM of the project, and I don't want it synced in that way.

Any help would be appreciated. I can run VST, JS or LV2.

Since you use REAPER and can run JS, this will do it.

(I.e. repeat until you take your finger off, triggered by one specific MIDI key only.)

Insert these before the drum sampler.
