I don't know why myself this feature is not the standard still. This question comes up in my head every now and then.

One feature that Live has and Bitwig doesn't. FL Studio also has this feature (only daw aside from Bitwig I've used)

I think the main reason for the record button is to start "on time".

But it's existence it is not either "yes or no" the capture features, as it is called in Live, can coexist along the record button just fine.

I had an idea for a simple DAW that I was going to call "Inspiration". Simply because it would boot and start listening and recording audio/MIDI input immediately. Ideas can be fragile, and by the time you boot, configure a new project or song, then press record, they can disappear. Someone should do this.

Great thread. +1000

How is capturing an idea you have in your head a waste of CPU? If that isn't something you do, then turn if off, or use another DAW.

The DAW I had in mind would be specifically for this purpose with copious export facilities so you could send the ideas to a more capable program for editing.

If you don't play an instrument, then yes, it would be completely useless. But why you would hate it is beyond me.

I said idea, not performance. We're all apparently not worthy of your skill or genius, so why don't you just go hang out with your peers and leave us peons alone?

In theory I like the idea.

The record button has one important function... it turns on the metronome.

So with no record button does that mean you have a metronome going the whole time? If not, how do ones recordings get put to a tempo and timeline?

Post

Sometimes I'm practicing. Sometimes I'm just goofing around, or testing sounds. Why would I record that? If I find something I like, I can always play it again and record that.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!
