Depends where you live. Here in the UK it's Scan with their 3XS systems.
Had one built in 2009 with the original i7 920 core and still works great.

How much of a "surcharge" do these companies charge over building the system yourself?

In the Uk - Scan - without a doubt. Have a 3XS system since 2010. Upgraded MB/CPU/RAM/PSU last year. Not because anything failed but just moved on from the original i3 540 !!!

As far as I can tell, on customisable systems, Scan are charging the same for the parts in a build as they are separately on their store, so nothing.

Interesting... I'll have to see if there is something equivalent to Scan in the U.S.
