Can tal drum be used conveniently / effectively for tuned percussion also? For instance, the manual implies one could drop in a sample with 24 consecutive tuned percusion notes and slice it onto individual pads; leaving 8 pads for untuned percussion. But beyond that, is it ( can it be) possible to assign key ranges to pads; so that one 'tuned' percussion pad can own a key range and co-exist with untuned pads on a single keys?

Post

hmm I can't think of a way to achieve that, each pad responds to a note so there aren't really assignable key ranges, it's not really how TAL Drum was designed to work.

Quite a while ago! Kind of a sibling product to TAL Sampler, fast, a bit (or a lot) lofi, timestretching, slicing. Think MPC, SP1200 etc.

I've put some thought into mixing tuned and untuned percussion on the pads. NI sequis does this, but only by preset selection. I believe 'all' that would be needed is per-pad key response range, keytrack on/off, and tune (to offset the sample frequency wrt midi note). Defaults for these additions could be what it is limited to now.

Post

anyone else care to comment if they would use a chromatic per pad mode? I can't see how you'd separate out the pad that's set to chromatic mode when the notes above and below it by default would trigger other pads usually, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're looking for. IMO you'd be better to break out the tuned percussion requirement to another instance of TAL Drum with per pad slices (or pitched single samples) or TAL Sampler which is designed for pitched samples (or another sampler of course).

Afaik, you can't play one pad chromatically. But there is a quick way to copy the sample from one pad to other pads and have them pitched automatically.

Load a sample to a pad.
Right-click the pad and choose Make Chromatic.
Now you can set the range of pads to copy to and pitch automatically.

sorry, typo in my post - edited now. I intended to ask if people would use a chromatic mode if it was available.
Thanks heaps for this tip though, I hadn't spotted the Make Chromatic context menu somehow! I use TAL Sampler way more than TAL Drum. Awesome, cheers!
