Jan Hammer plays like a guitar with a synth. An example, maybe not entirely what you mean, from 03:40 his solo:

There was this GM synth that had a Distorted Guitar patch, if you hold the note it would resonate with an overtone. This was simply a second oscillator set at, what, 3 or 5x the frequency with a slow attack. Filters with strong resonance can be utilized as well.
