I'm on Windows 7. First things I install are voidtool's Search Everything and Katmouse.

Search Everything makes up for the abomination that is the in-built search in Windows 7. It's just immensely useful in general and saves so much time.

Katmouse makes the mouse wheel affect the window under the mouse, not the one with focus. This is similar to how *nix-based systems work, and is something I just can't imagine doing without.

I have a lot of other things installed, but nothing I'd consider essential. Those 2 get used every day, all the time.

Yeah I use Everything all the time, it's much better than the regular windows search in File manager.

For a text editor, I use Ultra Edit. Its not especially cheap however. Overkill for most
no doubt.

*if you've ever had to work on a many gigabyte text file (and im talkin 200 or more gb), you would understand why ultra edit is so great. Thats not the only reason. Just one that little else can touch.

Another vote for Directory Opus. It can be a desktop replacement if desired,
very rich with capabilities beyond basic file management...
