I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett solo with a new macbook air m2 and a usb c cable running Ableton.

Is this supposed to work? For some reason it is.

Why should it not work? Scarlett interfaces are class compliant.

Thunderbolt is a superset of USB-C. You can plug a USB-C device into a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port on a PC and it'll work just fine.

The ports on the Macbooks are combined USB 4 & Thunderbolt. Intel made the Thunderbolt standard open and is/can be covered by the USB 4 spec, but the manufacturers still need to specifically support thunderbolt via USB4 like Apple does.

So all Thunderbolt ports are USB-C compatible (I didn't know), but not all USB(4)-C ports are Thunderbolt compatible.
