Punchy EDM Snares Question

Hi, this is more a music genre question, but was just curious, for people that have been fans and following electronic dance music such as DnB and EDM for a long time, when did you first notice these sort of wooden punchy sounding snares in the songs. They sort of sound almost like a woodblock at times. I am guessing this seeped into the genre for practical reasons, because it's probably much easier to fit into an overall mix that contains a lot of low end and bass
