Hi,

I'm soon moving to a new city, which is a good time to get one instrument.

I want to avoid going onto the GAS road. I would be happy with
a playable setup where I can make and practice music with and without a computer.
Music is a hobby for me, so, ideally something to do after work to relax. That is much easier if no computer has to be on at the same time.

My current ideas were:

Option A:
Get the Fantom 06. Kind of all-in-one and I would also get a decent synth with the ZEN-core engine. I can play multiple tracks at once, which is for me the main advantage over the Hyrdasynth.

Option B:
ASM Hydrasynth. Very capable synth with aftertouch and all the seek-after things, but I am worried that it would lead me further into investing more... E.g. what if I want some drums at the side or a proper sequencer.

Option C:
Get the MC 707 and one MIDI controller (for example Nektar GPX). The idea here is that "if" I don't manage to keep myself restricted to one device, then I might rather start with getting a "mixer/audio interface". If later I get for example a Minifreak, or some Korg Volcas, then the MC 707 is a good center.

Any feedback or suggestions are very appreciated.

PS: Currently, I have the Faderfox EC4, a Korg Volca Modular and Bitwig + some u-he VSTs (Zebra  ).

If you're going to be making any music without a computer, then the Fantom makes the most sense. You can make full tracks, have a decent keyboard, drums, FX...the full works. Looks like they even have pads, which is going to very useful for the drum side of things. Upgradable via cloud too, so it has future options. I don't really much like Roland nowadays, but many of their sw synthesis models are actually quite good. Dunno if Fantom let's you download some of their classic analogue emus? Likely, as Roland seem to have gone that route with loads of other synths...that are basically knob-laden controllers for their sw. Very good controllers too.

Hydrasynth looks OK, if you like that kind of thing, but it's not going to be that useful without a DAW of some sort. I guess you can do stuff with phones/tablets nowadays, but it's still not really a standalone solution for you. Same with the 707.

Fantom is going to keep you going without a computer, upgradable, can make whole tracks. Probably Roland has shitloads of other synths that do similar, so it's purely a case of price/feature value to you. Yamaha Motifs etc...do they still make them new? Similar kind of thing...good old-fashioned workstations are there for a reason.

If leaving your computer off is important, there's no question the Fantom is the way to go, at least from that list.
