Guitarist here looking to trigger .wav files using a Roland PK-5.
I`m not interested in making my own "beats" or creating hip hop or techno music.
Just looking for a piece of hardware to hold .wav files.
It has to have MIDI in and be able to go audio out to FOH.

Initial research lead me to an AKAI MPX16. But those aren`t made anymore. And none are for sale used locally here.

The AKAI MPX8 looks like it`s currently ticking all the boxes. But how well does it play with a MIDI pedal like the PK-5?

The Akai MPC one looks like it also checks all the boxes but that is massive overkill for what I`m looking for.

KORG Electribe Sampler is another one that looks like it checks all the boxes.

Korg Volca Sampler looks like it doesn`t have audio out. Just a headphone out.

Novation Circuit Rhythm is another one that checks all the boxes BUT that looks like "pad overload" to me.

So, it looks like either the AKAI MPX8 or Korg Electribe Sampler will satisfy my needs.
Mainly leaning towards the Electribe in case I ever want to expand on needing/using a sampler.

What do you all think? Any other pieces of hardware I haven`t mentioned or should check out?

A few things to consider that might make it easier to recommend a sampler:

Do you need a “sampler” (I.e., a device that records and processes samples internally), or just something that plays back samples you already have? Many of these so-called “samplers” are actually just sample players (usually with some level of editing capability), which is what I assume you’re looking for.

Do you have a preference for getting samples into the unit (e.g., USB transfer, flash card)?

Do you know how much memory/storage capacity you’ll need?

Do you have a budget in mind?
Logic Pro | LUNA Pro | OB-X8 | Prophet 6 | OB-6 | Rev2 | TEO-5 | Pro 3 | SE-1X | Minitaur | Deepmind 12D | Slim Phatty | TR-1000 | Analog RYTM mk2 | Digitakt 2 | TD-3 MO | TD-3 | Maschine+

Pretty much just a sample player.
It doesn`t matter if its USB transfer or flash card. The units I`m leaning towards use flash cards.
Budget is around a couple hundred dollars. (Electribe money)
I`m not scared to shop the used market either.

Do you want to tweak the sounds? Than you should maybe take a look at the Elektron Devices (Model Samples is cheap). If you just want a sampler without much fx etc you could take a look at the 1010 music blackbox. Advantages are the flexibility: plays samples, clips, slices, multi samples... Also you can use it as midi host etc, route the samples over 3 channels. I had the mpc one and the blackbox. The mpc one felt much more like a daw with all the possibilities but also with all the menu diving etc. I kept the blackbox mostly because of the form factor and because its the only device which can handle really long samples. But just asking why not some iPad / cheap pc?
