Hope this isn't a dum question:

I want to use my host at work - not while I work, but during down times - the hell of SoCal commutes and all.

But I installed it at home. I don't want to crack it or use warez or shady stuff: I love it as it is and want to support a product I love.

So here is my thought:
Could I install the host on a USB Key or a microdrive? Would this let me transport my prog. to work and back using only my one license?

thx.

It depends on the host and the license for it, and the mechanisms they use for copy protection (if any).

A number of hosts allow for two installs - home and office PC, or home pc and laptop.

Several of them throw stuff into c:\windows\system etc and so installing them on a USB key etc isn't that practical, you'd really have to install them on both machines with the installer.

FL allows a reasonable number of installs.

I had three at one time (never using more than one at a time) - home, laptop, and office machine. Now that I've replaced the office and laptop with one more powerful laptop, I'm just using two copies.

Incidentally, assuming you've installed your VSTI, samples, etc IN THE SAME PLACES on both machines, you can use a USB key etc to store or transport your current projects, so you don't have to sync those between two machines.

how about a proper answer for this? This sounds like an excuse to use cracked software.

Are we talkin 'legally' installing ur apps and plugs on more than one machine? A la copying ur CDs onto tape for the car.

I'm sure the developers would rather you purchased two copies. :)

I think the previous posts were proper answers no comp, some devs do allow multiple licences... :)

There's been one. Try reading.

No it doesnt.

No, we're talking legally installing your apps and plugins on more than one machine.

A la copying ur CDs onto tape for the car.

No.

I'm sure the developers would rather you purchased two copies.

Im sure you'd be better off checking with the given developer rather than making assumptions.

The fact is that with software you're allowed to use 1 copy at any given time. Thats if you have e.g. gigastudio installed on 4 computers, one on your home machine, one at work, one on your laptop and one on the machine your winter ressort - you legally can. Now if you want to use it simultaneously on 4 machines, say a DAW and 3 dedicated sampling machines - you need 4 licenses for that. Some software can be used in multiple instances simultaneously while just buying 1 license, but that obviously depends on the developer.

Example host software with USB keys. You just install your host on any amount of machines you please - but you can only use one at a time, namely the machine that has the USB key plugged in.

JMC has said it was OK to have a "reasonable" number of FLS installs (which I would interpret as two or three, not using concurrently) over in LoopTalk.

I believe the Cakewalk license explicitly allows for two copies, but I don't have it in front of me.

Also, doesn't copying CDs to tape for use in the care fall under fair use? I'm almost positive it does. Same as ripping your CDs to MP3s. This is all considered fair use and completely legal as far as I know.

Nonsense. It depends entirely on the license agreement.

AFAIK, yes. And that (contrary to nocompromise's assertion) is completely different from software licensing...

When I recently licensed tracktion, I was told I could generate two system keys to have it on two computers. Many other software license state two machines, not all do, but it does seem to be a standard.

There are a few that limit you to one machine only. Probably difficult to enforce unless they use a copy protection like Tracktion's where information about the computer is stored in the license key, so the same key will not work on a different computer.
