Am not a newbie when it comes to how to use effects, but I can't seem to be able to recreate some of the trippy sound effects used by Stars of the Lid and others. The kind of effects that would work well for psybient genre of music.
Hyperspace VST by United is amazing, an algorithmic reverb. So, what would be your recommendations for (gently) trippy fx ?

With Stars of the lid, they have a few effects, one is like a phaser but without the distortion of sound, the sound seems to "crossover". Really difficult to describe. Another is what sounds like an echo but just of a certain frequency. But I'm interested in anyone's experience with trippy fx and recommendations too.

For ambient any time based effect like : chorus, ensemble, phaser , flanger, reverb delay are import. Also having slow modulation on many parameters helps the track moving and it feels like it's breathing. Grannular synthesis and audi stretching are also quite popular in the genre. IMO, The best audio plugin for enormous evovling drone sounds is still the Metaphysical Function ensemble for Reaktor.

I had a listen to a few of theirs on YT. Didn't hear any kind of fancy FX. Loads of washy droning pads. Could be any manner of reverb/delays on the pads but who can tell when it's just a drone that goes on for 5 minutes? TBH I didn't even hear any phasing or flanging going on. Sounded a bit more like their cat sat on a keyboard, fell asleep and they recorded it for lack of anything else to do because they didn't want to play any tunes and disturb the cat...

Hey thanks.. appreciate it, I'll have to dig more into Metaphysical. I found Sample Modulator A works great for ambient too.HOTF wrote: Tue Apr 04, 2023 8:17 pm For ambient any time based effect like : chorus, ensemble, phaser , flanger, reverb delay are import. They use FX sparsely, as for the cat, well it was well trained.kritikon wrote: Thu Apr 06, 2023 4:13 am I had a listen to a few of theirs on YT. Didn't hear any kind of fancy FX. It's pre-trip, to calm first._leras wrote: Fri Mar 17, 2023 12:33 pm So.... delay, reverb, phaser or flanger. Slow chords. Done?
Doesn't sound very trippy to me... that would imply something more like Sphongle maybe...?

Never underestimate the power of reversing stuff. Either use reversed samples (guitars always good), or reverse reverb, using the old 'bounce with full wet reverb then reverse the resulting track' trick, or both.

Is that where you reverse the sample, add big reverb, then reverse again? I'll give that a go. Many, many moons ago, I sampled from that Enigma album. At the beginning a woman speaks "welcome to the world of music.. something and spirit". I isolated the word spirit, and reversed it. I expected to hear something like "tirips" but it played back as "spirits" ...donkey tugger wrote: Sat Apr 22, 2023 7:32 pm Never underestimate the power of reversing stuff.
