I'm completely heartbroken even though I knew he was seriously ill.
The extent, quality and originality of the works he has left is staggering.

This is a great loss! And at a very young 71 years.
One of the true pioneers.

I discovered his music through an Oakenfold mix during the early-ish 2000’s and I’ve been in love with his music ever since. I’ll have to watch Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence this evening.
RIP

Just two weeks ago I rewatched Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, in which he stars and for which he did the score. His combined use of traditional Japanese instruments and synthesizers to score a World War II picture was brilliant - pure genius - and held up flawlessly. I commented to my friend who watched with me that the music was so perfect it was as if the actors could hear it as they were performing.
I recently heard the main theme used (ahem) unaltered, save for some slow, fuzzy drums, on the LoFi Girl YouTube channel.
He was great.

Sakamoto died from cancer on March 28, 2023, at the age of 71. His death was announced on April 2, after his funeral had taken place.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

I can't help thinking that Ryu's contribution to "Taking Islands in Africa" contributed to the shape and sound of Japan's Tin Drum album, and some of David Sylvian's later work.
My understanding is that he pretty much just did that piece with Sylvian with no involvement from the others, which is why it sounds so different to rest of 'Gentlemen...'

I think Richard Barbieri played a synth bassline and Steve Jansen played some percussion.GaryG wrote: Sun Apr 02, 2023 8:33 pmGood point.seismic1 wrote: Sun Apr 02, 2023 8:27 pm RIP![]()

Sad news. I discovered YMO in the early 90s when I picked up Multiplies in a second hand record shop I frequented. What a wild album that was. More recently I've really enjoyed his collabs with Alva Noto. RIP.
