Never had it and never will. I treat funds rationally, and make decisions based on arguments and reason. If they do not hold up, I do not spend. Even with strong arguments and reasons, I still hold off committing to purchases until I have thoroughly researched and informed myself. This way, I make very few, but deliberate purchases.

Yep. I'm the same way.jocknaethick wrote: Mon May 01, 2023 8:36 pm It has struck me lately, that I really don't get remotely excited over new releases of pretty much anything music related anymore. I didn't even get the traditional foaming and shakes around last Black Friday. I started to think about why...
I have come to the conclusion that, given the multiple D.A.W's I own, the monsterous amounts of VSTi and effects, the vast sample libraries and hundreds of thousands of beats, not only could I barely scratch the surface of learning any of them to a comprehensive and expert level, I would most likely not even have time to noodle on the presets of them all if I spent 30 seconds on each for the rest of my waking life.
GAS got the better of me over the years, I became more of a collector of new shiny stuff rather than selectively buying the tools I needed and only those tools, which is strange really, because when I was still gigging, I got by for many years with one guitar, one amp and a couple of pedals without ever considering the other stuff. In those days I could churn out 5 or 6 songs in a single session...
But for whatever reason, I have realised in the last 6 months or so I don't really care about new gear, I have way more than I will EVER need or use (my poor old HW stuff that hasn't even been plugged in for an eternity, but I am too tight arsed to pay FeeBay their 13.5 % final valuation heist). Maybe I am just getting old, I dunno, but my bank account appreciates it for sure.
Do others here find their GAS fades with age or is it terminal for you?
I mentioned my reasoning over on this thread:

Different tools can spark new ideas. But if you're continually buying the next big thing, because you're unsatisfied with your music output, it might not be the software but your ideas that need an upgrade.

I've found that, for myself, GAS is pretty cyclical. I've gone through all phases of must-have-everything to don't-want-anything and everywhere in between. My latest bout of GAS has been for getting all the hardware I want and I crossed the last remaining items off my list over the last few months (except for one very hard to find and cheap-ish item), so my GAS is pretty much gone... for now.

Rather than age, call it:
- the firmer opinions and higher standards that come with experience
- plain old satiety, all my needs are met and I have universes to explore with the gear I already have
- regret at having bought a bunch of stuff that doesn't get used anymore
If you want to tempt me to buy software: make me something small, specialized, simple, really freaking cool, unique, with a good UI... and make it cheap. And recognize that it's still going to be difficult at this point.
If you want to tempt me to buy synth hardware: my space is full. You have to make something that fits my musical interests, and convince me it will do it better than something I already own which has survived previous waves of competition, and do it within budget. BTW you're also competing with all of my software, including VCV Rack and Bitwig Grid which can cook up pretty much whatever I want. Good luck.
If you want to tempt me with pedals: not gonna happen anymore, sorry. Compared to VSTs or Eurorack they're a hassle.
If you want to tempt me with bass guitar stuff: too bad, I bought my perfect instrument last year, and have all the accessories and strings I need for a while. All I lack is skill
When I see announcements for certain types of new things, I do get excited. And then usually I cool down and realize I have that zone covered already. The teasers for new Make Noise stuff for instance... sounds great to me and they make intriguing stuff, but so far I feel like can make those sounds with my current gear. Curiosity and excitement do not usually make it all the way to the Add To Cart button.

I have also found getting back into skateboarding in my late 50s has proven a massive distraction from any and all indoor activities AND I don't feel any need to be shopping for new decks, trucks etc...one skateboard, never ending fun.

So, skateboarding cures GAS? But, don't you then start craving more skateboards, better trucks, new wheels, cooler helmet and pads,...?

sadly, my knees already make an audible, grinding sound, when i walk
people who never skated, don't get how freeing it is. especially if you get on to ramps and pipes, but even just straight line, long street runs at speed
