This topic isn't about free hardware or 'analog' emulations.
It's about free synths, which sit nice in the mix and give you that quality sound feeling you get from hardware synths :)
I tested huge amount of free (and not so free:)synths last 10 years.
Some sounds plastic and 'cheap' ,other have artificial, weird and basically useless sound.
Synths i discuss here could be considered as free Pro,could be used among top notch expensive vst or hardware synths and listeners won't be able to hear significant difference or to recognize free and expensive ones, inside the mix.
Top 25 according to my taste and experience, feel free to add / exchange something or to discuss the list:

Out of all of these, I used Surge XT and Dexed, but dropped the latter due to incomplete MPE implementation.

Obxd should be at the top of the list , followed by Sq8l ( only 32 bit plugin that I still use )
Charlatan is also top notch sounding .
Eyeball exchanging
Soul calibrating ..frequencies

Firebird, Vital and Surge XT are top synths i use often
i'd have u-he TyrellN6 and Triple Cheese on that list too

Agree with OB-Xd.

MauSynth by Pekka Kauppila is nice too.

Slightly more complex stuff (for the likes of me!) that I like are Xakt by Krakli and the stuff from here https://www.kvraudio.com/developer/2mgt ... tive-tools
"Like toilet paper, we're on a roll."

i've got no idea what's the case with ob-xd,but disccodsp say - play it free at home, but if you wanna use it commercially ,buy license,so it's not free to me.
First version from 2dat still available,but it's kind of weird case - free,not free...last ...:):):)
First 3 in this list - Tal Noisemaker, Synth1 ,PG8X are so hardware like you can feel it in the mix immediately if find well made presets :)
Every good synth have something unique to offer, just need right sound designer or artist to make it popular :)
Cheers :)

I think in near future we are going to see interesting upgrades, cause right now from technical point synths are stuck in a commercial circle, especially hardware is really behind,no multilayer architecture,no serious innovations to make you wanna badly to spend last 2000 euro you keep away from wife :):):)
Keep smiling - nice people live longer and happier :):)

there is a free version of hy-poly called "HY-POLY free"

Phuturetone GR-8 ranks very high under that topic for me.

When I hear "Hardware DNA", I foremost think of an immediate, uncluttered, knob per function interface. GR-8 excels in that regard and is quite modern and polished, while some on the list feel cluttered and dated. Vital, on the other hand, is great because it embraces its software DNA.

Some guys do miracles with Vital - analog(ish) sound, complex modulations,so on so definitely feels like expensive hardware, when touch some nice preset with that ubique Vital vibe.
Thaere is at least another 25 good synths to be mentioned, but these stand out with something distinguish imho.
