will I be ok with my base MacBook Air w/ M2 or should I get the pro for the RAM? looking to be an at home mixing engineer and doing everything in the box. prolly with UAD plugins for the most part

Air is fine, if you're just starting.
Keep it simple, learn some stuff, then upgrade after a couple of years when you have a clear idea of which direction you want to go in.
Have fun!

I have the base model M1 13" MBP and 8 gigs of ram are plenty for this new architecture. At least with Logic and Bitwig.

the only thing i'd worry about with the Air is the 2 Thunderbolt ports, and having to use one for power. I'd be looking at getting a decent stable docking station to use with it, which will bump the overall price up a few hundred beans possibly. might not be an issue though? if you just want an audio out into headphones or speakers, gonna depend on how much stuff you have to plug in obviously. Always handy to have a MIDI keyboard and a decent soundcard. but you could literally make some great music with just the Air and some decent headphones.

But as far as specs go, i think even the last Intel Airs were fine for audio production. The M1 Airs perform well, as 30pinsimms said - the architecture lends to higher performance as per spec.

M2 has mag safe charge port, so you don’t lose a port to keeping the laptop charged. If you are unsure whether you need the pro model or not then I would suspect that the air would be fine.
