Looking for a soundcard for my laptop

I have a Dell Precision M4800 and would like to upgrade the audio from what it currently has. I bought a Fiio E10K headphone amplifier, but that did not work with Reaper. I'm not sure if an external soundcard might work. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
