Joy of Joy - List of Lists - What are Your Favourites?

Here at KVR we all like making lists, don't we? Trouble is, we've pretty much exhausted the supply of things to make lists about... until now. I thought it was way past time we made lists of our favourite things to make lists of. I'll start.
My favourite lists are lists of my favourite albums and artists. Perhaps strangely, though, I've never even thought about making a list of my favourite songs (until now). I think that's because songs always exist for me in a context of those around them. It's probably why I don't do streaming and I never, ever use random play, I always listen to full releases. I could definitely list my favourite singles and EPs, but not my favourite songs.
That said, I probably spend more time on song lists for live shows than on any other kind of list. I obsess over song orders and how many songs we have in the set from each album and which songs we've played too often and which have we not played enough. I can fill a week's worth of evenings doing a single song list. Then we get to the gig and everyone's running late so we have to cull 4 songs from our set and I get angry.
Instrument/effect/plug-in lists aren't really that important to me, except to remind me of things I have that I should use more. But they never have that effect.
To summarise in list form, my favourite lists are, in order -
- set lists,
- favourite artist lists, and
- favourite album lists.
What about you?

I am just shocked to hear that Bones gets angry!!! lol
I look at lists from time to time to see what is out there, but honestly, they tend to be lists of the incompetence of others far more than any sort of useful revelation. I absolutely do not need to read for the 567th time that Skplugifuk 12 Pro XIIV the Always On Sale Edition is da bestest eva for people who do not know how to do the thing they pretend they know how to do.
I wrote an article on this some years ago. It was studiously ignored by VST list-makers everywhere: https://benedictroffmarsh.com/2019/03/1 ... -the-best/
And this one for good measure: https://benedictroffmarsh.com/2020/10/0 ... omes-good/

I assume the third list is a combination of every item on the first two? That's definitely how those lists would work for me.

i kind of dread set lists, personally. to me it's like scheduling sex positions in advance. by the time we finish the first song, i'm already second-guessing the plan. having a list of songs to play is nice, but i've pissed off bandmates plenty by calling audibles throughout a show

okay favourite lists, asde from the two already provided...
if i ever see a hit man's list,
well, that might become a favourite
it depends on the content
if bad people are on the list, then it would become a favourite
most other favourite lists of mine are word lists like...
"top thousand 7-letter words according to probability and playability"
"Q words without the letter U"
"words without vowels"

I've always enjoyed reading lists where artists I like/respect list the top whatever albums that they still love, that have influenced them strongly, that they never get sick of, etc. Especially if they get in depth and talk about the details of it, and then the list can become a great learning tool for learning about them. A lot of times, when you are reading interviews, if the interview is maybe not going well, or the questions aren't clicking, or they are tired, whatever, sometimes artists don't talk about their own stuff very well, but most of the time they seem to really open up to questions about music they love, and then explain a lot about exactly why. It brings the fan back out of them.
Also, too many times to mention, it has made me aware of other groups to check out that I may have slept on, or to dig a little deeper on some others I may have not given a chance to. Sometimes you read something, then go investigate it, and you are like "how did I miss this, it is great!"

I pretty much never find that with those kinds of lists. Quite the opposite, in fact. Some of my favourite artists have the most boring, predictable and just plain awful lists of influences and favourite albums. Sometimes it's almost enough to put me off them.

Aside from my reliance on to-do lists for work, I’m not really a list addict, except for my wish list of hardware synths, which is basically just every synth ever made.

Set lists are shit. It's work, hence boring, to do the same set every night. To do a whole tour where every night is the same shit, no thanks; leave that for those that perform to tape.funky lime wrote: Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:15 pm i kind of dread set lists, personally. to me it's like scheduling sex positions in advance. by the time we finish the first song, i'm already second-guessing the plan. having a list of songs to play is nice, but i've pissed off bandmates plenty by calling audibles throughout a show
It makes it fun for the band and fans when you change up the song order.
Frank Zappa mentioned in an interview he never plays the same solo twice.
So what you hear on record you won't hear live. Amen to that.
