Nektar SE49 Midi Controller - assigning the fader in Reaper?

This controller comes with a Midi assignable fader. I want to assign it to the fader on a given channel so i can work it in real time. Unfortuantely the manual does not tell me how to do this and I cannot figure it out. My DAW is Reaper and the keyboard works fine for everything else. Does anyone know how to solve this?

i don't use either but does midi learn not work?
right click on fader? choose midi learn, wiggle fader?

I can record data that way, but it doesn't play back.
