There are many A.I. assisted "fast/smart" EQs and Spectral Balancing options on the market nowadays. What's the difference between these two types of plugins?

Post

I know very little about smart EQs, but I suspect they're meant to be used on a channel, not the master bus.

EDIT: what I was trying to say is, an AI driven EQ can be meant to EQ a single track, not aiming for spectral balance of that track in isolation, but to shape the space it occupies in the EQ range (e.g. a guitar wil sit better in the mix, when it doesn't overlap too much with the frequencies occupied by the bass line, making the mix 'muddy', and the guitar hard to hear at comparable levels).

I like TDR Smart Mastering EQ on the mix bus to balance out everything into the direction of pink noise.
That's a static balancing.

Then some other things if necessary (Comp, Saturation etc).

Last Soundtheory Gulfoss for dynamic balancing.

IMO that helps a lot to clean up the mix.

Maybe it's a terminology thing.

When I think 'Smart EQ' I think of something that looks at the incoming signal, determines what it is, and builds a static or dynamic EQ curve. When I think 'Spectral Balancer' I think of something that looks at a mix buss and tries to balance it out to a specific internal curve with dynamic EQ.

In my mind, I think of a Spectral Balancer as a type of a Smart EQ. Smart EQ being a broader category that includes Spectral Balancers.
