So much for the inexorable rise of subscription-only. First Waves cave, now Avid.

Via Production Expert:

New Pro Tools Pricing
Starting today (September 21st 2023), new Pro Tools Perpetual Licences will again be available for sale exclusively through authorised Avid resellers, they will not be sold via the Avid Web Store. Pricing is as follows:

Pro Tools Artist Perpetual Licence - $199

Pro Tools Artist Perpetual Upgrade - $69

Pro Tools Studio Perpetual Licence - $599

Pro Tools Studio Perpetual Upgrade - $199

Pro Tools Ultimate Perpetual Licence - $1,499

Pro Tools Ultimate Perpetual Upgrade - $399

Pro Tools Studio Perpetual Upgrade EDU for Students & Teachers - $99

Pro Tools Studio Perpetual Upgrade EDU for Institutions - $99

It’s worth pointing out that the price of an Ultimate perpetual licence has been significantly reduced, when it was last available it was $2,599, a drop of over 40%. EDU Perpetual Licences are not being reintroduced.

Simplified Plans
To simplify keeping perpetual licence customers current, Avid will also consolidate the existing Pro Tools Perpetual Updates + Support Plan Renewals and Pro Tools Perpetual Updates + Support Plan Upgrade (Get Current) into one.

Starting September 21, Pro Tools Perpetual customers will use a Pro Tools Perpetual Upgrade to renew their perpetual licence or get current, there will no longer be a separate, higher priced upgrade for customers who have dropped off their Updates + Support plans.

Also 2023.9 is released today with the following new features:

Pro Tools® software version 2023.9 provides the following new features and enhancements:
• Pro Tools Sketch™
• App for iOS on iPad
• Sketch window in Pro Tools

Miscellaneous new features and improvements
• Save Copy In with Selected Timeline Range option
• Reordering plug-ins by drag and drop
• Width-changing plug-ins organized in sub-menu
• Track Marker improvements
• New immersive surround format path orders in I/O Setup
• New Path Order listings added to the Input page of the I/O Setup
• New Disable Slewing While Looping option
• Activate Pro Tools Power Scheme option in the Playback Engine (Windows only)
https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles ... 2023.9.pdf

A couple of useful extra features there. Got very excited at the prospect of plugin drag and drop, but it means re-ordering in the mixer inserts, not as I hoped the ability to prioritise plugins in the menu hierarchy. Ah well.

They try. And, if it doesn't work, they scratch it.

That's how the market works when people vote with their wallet. Good stuff.

Absolutely.

I've been arguing here for years that a) the financial case for subscription is built on sand because consumers and businesses alike need to reduce not increase ongoing outgoings and b) therefore the idea that everyone is going to subs-only is for the birds.

I would absolutely hate a subscription only model for my DAW (it would be the worst business model for me, as I haven't upgraded my DAW for over 5 years now). That said, it would be interesting to see how many people sub, and how many buy a perpetual license (considering Studio One offers both).

Well, that's good news for PT users. I'm still on PT11 and they lost me when they went sub-only, but haven't even had it installed in several years and probably not going to upgrade since I no longer have a need for it. I might have to take a look at what's been improved since they went sub, though...

A helluva lot. PT11 I think was the worst release they ever did.

Together with their free version and iPad thing, it looks like Avid really do want to get back in the game. Don't know if it's connected with the new owners as some of their moves predate that development, but perhaps its all part of a business plan their buyers approved of. (having a glass half full day)

Did PT ever evolve to support dual monitors so you can undock mixer and put on second monitor?

All daws did forever but not PT I looked at PT12 I believe it was.

In Windows you can't free float it outside the app, but I have the app across 2 monitors with no issues and keep the mix window on one and project on the other. The video window and metering plugins are on a third monitor, outside the app.

Thanks.

So you expand main window to both and then
- dock mixer on right edge
- and track view docked to left and get scroll bars for tracks timeline,
or?

Good you mention video
- on windows can you do mp4 container with h264 inside?
- I also have mov container with h264 inside from camera?

and all this without quicktime installed?

Remember there were some proprietary Avid format before only.

Thanks again.

Post

Yes to all that, except I do have Quicktime installed so not sure if there would be an issue without it.

Ok, I think I get it. Not docked window at all, so you cannot maximize track window since then will hide mixer part.

Will have to see if trial is available to check out if quicktime is needed or not.
- could be whether to render to video, which I don't use
- just use for preview and then render audio and move to video editor and line up

Avid have never done trials. You can use Intro for free, but that doesn't support video so you're best option is to rent Studio for one month @$30.
