When it comes to acoustics and the equipment we use to monitor and produce music with?

You could check to see if their pants are on fire. That would be the first clue.

Well, aside from that ^^^
there is/are 'the' or 'a' standard or expectation that gets imposed upon those aspiring to break into, or work within certain "markets", that can (if promoted enough) become or are touted as required to do so. Unless one resists/makes due... (i.e) Not everyone uses Pro-tools, needs a workstation that will handled 200+ tracks preloaded with VSTs, or can afford $5K+ monitors.
So, not necessarily a "lie", but definitely a buyer beware, from the standpoint of what is actually necessary/practical for YOU to produce/do what YOU want to do. [2c]

They are not lying - just marketing. Most media we consume these days is marketing, so it may feel like we 'need' these things to be successful, and many successful people (who would naturally get 'the best') will help that marketing by telling the truth ... "This is awesome and helped me produce a platinum record".. but they didn't get there *because* of it.
Correlation vs causation is important.
With that being said:

What kind of lies?
I don’t think anyone really gets into this industry for the money. Sure, there’s money to be made, but there are a million easier ways to make money. Nothing is perfect, of course, and if you believe something is based on marketing, well that’s on you. Unless you’re a child, you should know better. Plus, so much of this is so subjective. I’ve read many posts that seem to describe something in a completely different way than how I’ve experienced it. Not from the company, but from users. I’ve seen users get called “shills” because they like something despite its flaws.
Here are my tips:
Try before you buy. Easy enough with software.
Buy from a retailer with a good return policy. I bought a bunch of pedals last year from Sweetwater that didn’t work out for me. They didn’t make a peep about taking them back.
Learn how to properly demo something. I see a lot of evidence of people checking out presets and coming to a conclusion. If all you do is use presets, I guess this is OK, but I recommend a “tire kicking” approach that points out strengths and weaknesses.
Keep in mind that nothing is perfect. A few months ago someone was concerned about some of Diva’s behavior. They couldn’t get past it. That’s your prerogative, but don’t think that you can’t find flaws in other instruments, including the original analog classics that we all love. Disregarding something because of a flaw, when it otherwise can make great music, is silly. Just know your tools and use them accordingly.

I have seen many many stupud conspiracy theories here, about one developer or another because they don't provide something for free or they are not responsive enough or whatever.
But in the first place, 100% of the developers in these industry are doing that because they chose passion over money in the first place. Very clearly...
Now that doesn't mean that sometimes, companies can't make mistake and that of course they don't want to survive and make money and if possible get rich.
But no, the "music industry" isn't lying.
If by audio industry we are talking about high-end audio and audiophile stuffs. Then yes, they are crazy liers. They sell cables for 1000USD per meter when nobody can ear any difference in a proper blind test. There isn't even any probing blind test for hi-res audio (that is sold be everybody including sony, apple and others) and yet it is flourishing.
Actually there are even softwares proposing to oversample audio to more than 1 million hertz (1000 kilohertz), to improve the quality of audio and I know people buying it...
When of course all it does, is, .... either change nothing either damage the initial signal.

An idiot on Set Theory:

yes. i think so. some very successful beat makers use garbage systems and monitoring. but they totally understand what makes money and they have connections with the right people.
