Today marks the date when Freddie Mercury died of AIDS on the 24th of November 1991.

This documentary details his life up to this point, revealing intimate details and the distressing events that led up to his passing. Note that the language and some scenes are of an adult nature in places, so is not suitable for younger children to watch or to hear.

People in wealthier countries have access to HAART, which makes HIV a chronic illness that won't have a huge impact on life expectancy. Not sure when it was developed, but someone like Magic Johnson has survived HIV infection for 30+ years, now.
I knew people who got into IV drugs. They're all dead, now.
But from what I've read, HAART can reduce HIV in the blood to undetectable levels.

Freddie had HIV but died from bronchial pneumonia.

Ok, but people don't technically die of AIDS. They die from the opportunistic infections and the cancers AIDS enables. There's a rare form of pneumonia that is linked with AIDS. But if he'd had a functional immune system, it likely wouldn't have killed him.
