The FREE plugin that wasn't free

6 months ago, an AI based plugin for noise/reverb removal was touted by many MANY youtubers as free to download and use: GOYO aka Supertone Cleaner.
If you go to the GOYO website, you learn that it was in fact a time limited beta, and it redirects you to the product (which seemingly works well, btw), which is sold under the Supertone Cleaner name.
I nevertheless found a link to the original GOYO plugin and installed it, only to be greeted by a banner telling me the beta period is over and I have to buy it. Nothing wrong with that, but it shows that it was designed as a time limited demo from the start. However dozens of Youtubers/influencers and websites advertised it as FREE. And I suspect many of them were honest and would have called it time limited beta had they known it, instead of free. I'm having a hard time believing all of them consciously lied to their viewers.
So it seems that Supertone lied to all the Youtubers by telling them it's free and thus got free advertising from them. And if that's the case, it's not the first time some plugins editors do that, it's a worrying trend.

When I joined the beta for GOYO (around 6 months ago) they were very clear that it was a free BETA version and that all testers would get a discounted price when the finished plugin was released. The release version is called CLEAR (not Cleaner) and as promised I was offered a substantial discount. It's on sale for $69 atm https://product.supertone.ai/clear

Ok, but the Youtubers weren't so clear about that. For me a free plugin and a tim limited beta are not the same thing.

That's about every plugin you don't really technically own.
Every plugin being free or paid that need any internet access may stop working or being authorized for whatever reason.
And while it's annoying for something you get for free, imagine how bad may be if you paid for it

Naturally. It's a give and take with the software developers or manufacturers. One side can't live without the other.egbert101 wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 11:06 am Youtube influencers are a pain. They're not really very honest, they shill, they make very pretty videos.
What really annoys me is that there's such a big hotbed for influencers these days. Just take a look at a lot of threads in this forum.
"Which synths should I use?"
"Which effect should I use?"
"Which MIDI controller should I buy?"
I want to post everytime "The one you like the most". Doh.
Don't be a sheep, or the influencer wolf will eat you alive.
Sorry to say, but, people are responsible themselves for all this.

What is most important to see is that those Youtubers aren't experts. They're just users, like everyone here. They just happened to have a "great" business idea, show their stupid mug, act like a jerk, and somehow catch a lot of flies with that.

I think it was pretty well explained on the official website. The beta required internet connection and it was going to be shut down after the full release (originally scheduled for October, then delayed to November). That served both as testing and marketing.
Until evidence is provided, I tend to doubt YouTubers were intentionally tricked by Supertone.
I'm more inclined to think they either went in for the sensationalistic headline, or they simply don't know WTF they're doing.
The noise removal algorithm works pretty great.
I used Goyo for months, then bought Clear recently (although it's currently less stable than Goyo).

Congratulations. You've now learned why believing everything you're told on Youtube is not sensible behaviour.lolilol1975 wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 10:09 am Ok, but the Youtubers weren't so clear about that. For me a free plugin and a tim limited beta are not the same thing.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

I have a youtube channel and i coudn't agree more with you, it's all a shit.
I struggled with some companies, i also got insulted by them and their followers, just because i don't do things the way they are very used to with others youtubers.
If a plugin it's bad, it's bad and that's my video. I believe in honesty and so i also make negative videos if something doesn't work as it should.
I see lots of you blame youtubers (in other topics too), but the issue belong more to viewers, the way you click on videos and decide to follow/watch contents.
I HATE those stupid thubnails, i fu***ng hate to shoot my face like that, but i tried differently and doesn't works. I tried different time on the same video to create 2 thubnails, one i'd call normal, and for a reason i still don't understand EVERYTIME the stupid thubnails win. In 100% of my tests these won. And now i understand why even more famous youtubers such MrBeast, LinusTechTips and others, even if they could close the channel and live like rich people they keep using these stupid thubnails...
Same is for content. When i make a video where i try to explain something that require a bit more of attention, people skip parts or the whole video. When i make a "tips" like video they are more succesfull.
For the science i also tried a short that imho it's freaking useless like "best plugins for vocals" then i just show the plugins in less than a min, with close to none explanation, this stupid short keeps generating views, while other videos where i spent lots of time to create that have very interesting and important stuff get just forgotten.
So i'm the first one who dislike all the "yes man" because they are just bitches who say that "this" plugin is the best ever made. Every plugin is the f**** best, how's that possible?!
Although i don't blame them since they get lots of views, subs and like, cause this is somehow how democracy works, people prefer to follow that kind of contents and channel, than more honest one.
I can surrender to thubnails, but i'll never say i like a plugin if i don't, that's for sure, cause a thubnails is cosmetic, while the content it's matter of respect for people.
Although since there's a lot of complain about youtubers, i'd like you to think more about to complain viewers who prefer to support these kind of channels instead of more "healthy" and transparent channels
m2c ofc

Social media and sites like Youtube seem to feed on human narcissism.Frankie.T wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 12:52 pm I have a youtube channel and i coudn't agree more with you, it's all a shit.

That said, there are praiseworthy exceptions. Loopop's Youtube channel, for example. No mug, no exaggerated "HEY! IT'S ME!!!" intro, not overly praising nor overly bashing stuff. It's just about the thing the video is about. Which should be normal, but, stupid times we live in.

Most negative example of what I described above that I've seen recently:
I mean, come on, seriously, what is that? "Act as jerky as you can" contest? It's about a synth and its preset, not about some chump acting "crazy".
So sad that THAT is what people like to see, and not a regular showcase of the presets of the synth.
