Yes, subject to the usual rules regarding fx use, and audio to whole tracks i.e. no chopping, glitching, repeating for consistency etc.

Thanks Richard ... I would play tracks (or midi out to them) - and then use FX on those complete tracks. Seems fair to me. Now, using the Yamaha DGX would be nice, but it has it's own sound set built in ... so it's probably forbidden under the "no samples" rule, even though I can't change them!

Ok I have a question too for you Richard.

I recently purchased a Novation Tracks which supports totally 8 channels of audio. Two internal synth engine channels, two external MIDI channels (audio is returning to the Novation Tracks) and four sampled base channels.

My two MIDI channels are a Behringer TD-3 and a Modal Electronics Craft Synth 2 which both return audio back to Tracks. Now (I know this a long stretch) could these two synths be considered as hardware internal plugins for my hardware DAW (Novation Tracks) so I could use them and sequence and arrange everything live or it should be strictly Novation Tracks which means just the two internal synth engine channels plus the four sample channels (the two midi channels will be wasted) and I will go “the 1-4 bar loop dumping” way into REAPER and arrange and mix there.

Novation Tracks sounds like its a DAW not a synth. You can use it, but only one synth as your sound source, whether internal or external to the Novation tracks.

Hardware is allowed this month, but it does have complications in the context of OSC. Basically, each track has to be laid down separately and brought into your DAW as audio, where it can then be mixed using fx allowed for the challenge, while keeping the sound as 'recognizable' from the synth.

Also - '1-4 bar loop dumping' sounds to me like it might break the rules regarding use of samples.

Hi all,

Regarding use of synths that multiple capabilities, such as Halion 7:

Use of the sampler portion of Halion 7 is forbidden by the rules regarding use of samples. However, is it permissible to use (say) both the FM and the Wavetable synthesis portions on a composition?

AAS Player is another case. One can, for example, play preset sounds from both Lounge Lizard and Ultra Analog Synth. Is that permissible? The difference for those not aware between the individual synths and the Player is that the Player doesn’t allow editing of the sounds to the extent possible with the individual synths. Player is a synth that is a combination of the many synths in their cut-down versions.

I assume that Reaktor is not a synth, but if it could be considered as such, then wow!

It's probably impossible to cover all cases such as these in a simple statement, but some guidelines would be helpful.
