The sounds for one thing are a different collection of samples. That's the main thing. You can actually use Sonik Synth 2's sounds within your SampleTank 2 XL which is kind of cool (but not the other way around as SS2's GUI is closed just to SS2's sounds where ST2's GUI is open).
You can import new sounds into ST2XL from Akai, Wave, Aiff and other sources. You can't do this in SS2 or even ST2 LE. So, it's good you have that.
One good thing about Sonik Synth 2 for SampleTank 2 XL owners is that there will be a discounted "cross-grade" for the launch of the product. You might even think of it as a "sounds only" upgrade (because apart from the sexy interface SS2 has, it's engine is the same as ST2 which you already have). Except there is no real "sounds only" upgrade and you get the nice extra GUI in this crossgrade anyway.
Which is "better" is really hard to say. It's very subjective. Sonik Synth 2 is geared more toward EVERYTHING synth but ranging from early analogs to meat + potatoes workstation sounds (pianos, orchestral, voices, gtrs, drums) to outlandish madness the likes of which you've never heard before!!!! It's pretty diverse.
I think they complement each other well sound-wise. SampleTank 2 XL gives you more of a cross-section of acoustic and electric instruments and while Sonik Synth 2 also adds to your collection with more of those types of sounds it extends it into the realm of "unlimited synth flavor" with the variety of waves, elements and evolving, expressive patches it has. Thousands of them in fact. An endless sea of inspiration and fun for the whole family too. (have I lost my marketing mind???
