Passive custom built in 1996, by a well known speaker maker in my country. 8 inch sub and a Philips tweeter.

Why?
By chance. Found them at a thrift shop, for cheap, brought them home and fell in love with the silky smooth highs, and extremely flat response. While still going into the high 30s for bass!! Worth at least 100x from what I paid, imho.

Favorite things?
Price. Uniqueness. Very very pleasant as both a daily hifi speaker, as well as for mixing and mastering. Just a really great speaker overall, reminds me of mid size genelecs in its sound signature.

Least favorite things?
They're old now, some caps probably needs changing. There's a very very slight phase issue that I've gotten used to now. Probably again, the caps need changing. They're passive so they rely on external power, I've matched them with a Philips amp from the late 80s that seems to be a perfect match both watt and impedance, but that's getting old too and also probably needs a refurbish.

I've been using Mackie 8 inch active mk1 speakers for like 17 years. They're finally giving out. I think I'll buy some more as I'm used to them and I enjoy them immensely. I've also used cheapo Samson active monitors as well as alesis passive and Yamaha passives for a b monitor. Once I get a new set of Mackies I'll just be using a Bluetooth portable speaker and a phone for checking mixes.

As for why, they were what I could afford, I had a small amount of experience with them, they weren't ported which gave them a flat but slightly limited low end, and they had nice amps with plenty headroom and adjustment in the highs and lows for room "correction".

Genelec 8020Ds and a 7040a subwoofer

Reasons: sound, size, specs, build quality, and positive reviews/brand reputation. I spent a lot of time researching monitors when I decided to upgrade to these a few years ago and it’s one of the best studio improvements I’ve ever made.

while the genelec sound is my all time favorite, arent they a bit small? dont you miss that sub-air that larger speakers will give you? Nvm, i just noticed you also had a subwoofer.

dirt cheap "sound good monitors" are M-Audio BX8 D3 and Behringer B2031A

id pick those over say yamaha hs7 any day. Sure, the yamahas might be a bit more brutal in its honesty, but youd get tired of them as a daily driver very quickly... they are good as a 2nd reference though, but for a budget user id much rather pick something that sounds pleasant to the ears for hours on end =)
if it wasnt for my unusally lucky find; id be using either of those right now. Probably the dx8.

A pair of Focal Solo6 BE and matching Sub6, though I rarely use the sub. I also use a pair of Eve SC204s and custom mix cubes that I made. DT-880s for headphones.
I'm very familiar with these speakers. The high end on the Focal speakers is not as fatiguing as others I've used. I really liked a set of PMC monitors I had, but they got water damage while in storage. I preferred them to the Focals in some ways but I've gotten used to them so I'll keep using them.

I just relocated so all i have is a pair of AKG240s for audio work, and a Grado 325x for regular listening (not really acceptable). My long term ( 2003-2017) setup was an old set of Event 20/20 and a subwoofer in a fairly well treated room. I also had a pair of wharfedale evo 40s, subwoofer, with a MOSFET Ashly amp which was nice for a different perspective and great fun for general listening. The 20/20s are nothing special but very fast transient response. I used that set for so long i was able to determine what was what as far as how things would transfer to other systems. If i could do it i'd get a pair of Neuman 300s (or better) but i have neither the money nor the space.

Genelec 1030s and Yamaha HS8 and genelec 1029 with matching sub.

I could mix on anything, I just happened to buy these at one point in time.

Same pair of Dynaudio BM6A's since 2002. They sound hifi enough to not get ear fatigue after a few hours and neutral enough to get good translation. Tried everything in the price range and the BM6A's were the best by far imho. I don't know anything about the new Dynaudio products.

Just upgraded a few months ago to Dynaudio Core 59 monitors. My room treatment is now good enough to really take advantage of their sound. I have LYD48 before. They were great but the Core 59 is just sort of "more everything" that I like about Dynaudio. I can mix on them for 12 hours without any fatigue.

KRK Rokits. Some big ones downstairs and some smaller ones up here. They were cheap and I like the sound of 'em.

One thing that annoys me is that the auto power off thing occasionally turns them on due to the spaghetti of electrical wiring that is my house.

Genelec 1029A & 1091A Sub and a pair of IK iLoud's

I got the Genelecs to master a couple of releases 20 odd years ago. Build quality and accuracy is top-notch imho. Bought the iLouds fairly recently to check mixes on, and for general (computer) listening.

I didn’t hear them in person to test them out first, but I took a chance and ordered a pair.
I really like the sound quality and am glad I bought them.

Same ones

Size and sound played a big role in why I got them.

I previously had JBL 308s, but they took up too much space. Those JBLs sounded great though and what you get for the price is impressive.
