Shaker midi pattern

Hi Music Lovers!

When programming tambourine and working with velocity to make it sound more natural, I usually use:

High, low, medium, low
or
Medium, low, high, low

But how do you do the same with shakers? I've tested different setups but nothing seems to sound good. Please give me some basic velocity patterns for this.

Have you tried playing/recording them in realtime (on a MIDI keyboard or probably even better on drum pads)?, instead of 'mousing' them in, helps here for realisticness.
