My goal is to minimize computer work.
My DAW is Ableton and what I like the most is setting the start and end of the loop. It seems trivial but it makes a world of a difference. SP-404 can do that very well.
But, since I want not being tied up to a computer, I need some quality sampling. Not just loops and phrases, but instruments as well.
SP-404 MK2 seems to be doing great job in sampling short sounds like percussives and keys. But I didn't find people on youtube demonstrating sampling pads or strings. Being able to sample VST/hardware pads and strings without to much of manual work would be awsome and no brainer for me.

SP404 could use an auto-sampling feature, but I don’t think it has one. Short, percussive sounds don’t really need multisamples, but longer sustaining sounds like pads and strings can only go so far. This workflow probably is how I’d do it: but it doesn’t disconnect you from the PC. Doing this exclusively in SP404 MK2 feels like it would be a chore.
If you are looking to disconnect from the PC, maybe the Maschine+ is an option. It’s for an amazing auto-sampling capability and its storage is also expandable with SD cards. This video shows just how easy it is:
I get the price difference, but I’ve recently seen a good condition Maschine+ on Guitar Center for $499, so approaching the SP404 MK2 price.

There are plenty of ambient/drone pieces on youtube for the SP-404 Mk2. It isn't really meant for such things, but is really geared toward lofi beat making. It's just super flexible enough to fit into your various workflows.
